Garden City, N.Y. - While these two teams will meet again on Jan. 11 for a conference contest, the Adelphi University women's basketball team won a non-conference showdown with Stonehill College, 82-75, on Sunday at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
The Panthers played their most consistent 40-minute game of the season to improve to 3-6 overall.
Adelphi shot a stellar 47.0 percent (31-of-66) from the field in the game -- a season-best. Five players scored in double figures, led by
Emily Miccile's 18-point showing.
Ty'zhea Hawkins (13 points) and
Madison Graham (11 points) poured in season-high totals, as well.
A quick 7-0 run late in the first quarter, capped by a Graham three-pointer, broke a 10-all tie and shot Adelphi out to a 17-10 advantage.
While the Panthers led 35-33 at the half, Adelphi did build out the largest difference of the contest (28-16) with 6:14 left in the second quarter.
The Panthers scored on three of their first four possessions after halftime and never looked back. Miccile drilled the first bucket of the half, while
Rebecca Lee converted on back-to-back lay-ups.
Although Stonehill came within a point of tying the score three times in the fourth quarter, Adelphi answered each time. Miccile,
Sarah Deyo and
Emma Cuccurullo all hit buckets in response to the Skyhawk comeback bid.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers are back in action on Saturday (Dec. 18), when they travel to Wilmington, Del. for a 3 p.m. opening tip at Goldey-Beacom College.
