Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore forward
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca cashed in yet another overtime game-winner Saturday in the Adelphi University men's soccer team's 1-0 thriller over Stonehill College in a fantastic NE10 match-up on the grounds of Motamed Field.
Descalzo, who entered tonight's game tied for the nationwide lead in game-winners, tacked on another with his third overtime clincher and his fifth game-winning goal in the last six games.
Only 54 seconds into overtime,
Paolo Marciano played a diagonal towards the far flank, which
Tim de Meij flicked towards center and Descalzo made the slide to knock in the game-winner.
Before that, Andrew Hammersley put the game on his back for Stonehill (5-5-1, 2-3-1 NE10) and made 11 outstanding saves. Each one more impressive than the next.
For Adelphi,
Daniel De La Heras kept three shots out of goal, including a brilliant left-handed stop on Luke Fuller on Stonehill's only shot on goal of the second half.
The Panthers (7-3-1, 6-1 NE10), who extended their winning streak to six games, possessed the ball an outstanding 68 percent of the game.
Adelphi outshot Stonehill by a commanding 21-8 count (13-2 in shots on goal) and earned nine corners to the Skyhawks' two.
Head Coach
Gary Book and the Panthers will now hit the road Tuesday (Oct. 19) for a 3 p.m. game at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.
