Marciano's Penalty Rallies Men's Soccer at Bentley in Overtime, 4-3

Waltham, Mass. - In its first game in ten days, the Adelphi University men's soccer team was awarded two penalties and rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit Tuesday in a 4-3 come-from-behind overtime victory at Bentley University in NE10 action at the Bentley Soccer Field.

Ten days ago, Adelphi (8-3-1, 7-1 NE10) scored 54 seconds into overtime in a 1-0 win over Stonehill. Today, the Panthers needed 1:33 at Bentley.

It was Adelphi's fifth game this year that needed the extra session and fourth overtime victory. The last time the Brown and Gold played five overtime games in a single season occurred in 2014, when the program was only two years into its NE10 tenure.

A game that was scoreless at the half, Adelphi and Bentley (3-9, 1-7 NE10) combined for all seven goals in the final 42:01 of the contest -- an average of a goal every five minutes.

The Panthers, who held a 16-11 shot advantage in the match, evened the score, took the lead and won it in overtime while playing 10-a-side. Ofek Pinto and Bentley's Connor Mote were both sent off in the 61st minute.

Only 1:33 into overtime, Tim de Meij was taken down on a challenge inside the 18, leading to a second penalty opportunity for Adelphi.

Seconds earlier, Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca nearly converted a nation-leading sixth game-winner this season, on a header from the top of the box, but was called offside.

Nevertheless, Marciano, from the spot, planted the clincher inside the left corner with his left foot. Unbelievably, it was Marciano's first game-winning goal of the 2021 campaign.

It had appeared though that a six-game winning streak was about to be washed away. The Panthers trailed 2-0 with 30 minutes left in the game.

Descalzo took over and cut the deficit in half on a penalty in the 65th minute, before cleaning up a loose ball in front of goal just 6:28 later to level it at 2-all.

Then, in the 83rd minute, Adelphi had its first lead of the contest, after Filippo Peri after put back a rebound on a re-directed Marciano cross.

Although it was dicey at times, Daniel De La Heras picked up a seventh victory in as many decisions with a three-save performance.

The Panthers are back in action Saturday (Oct. 23), when they welcome in Saint Anselm College for a noon matinee at Motamed Field.
