Garden City, N.Y. - On Wednesday night, the Adelphi University men's soccer team earned its fifth-consecutive victory with a 3-1 decision over defending NE10 Tournament champion Assumption University at Motamed Field in Garden City.
Since their five-game winning streak commenced on Sept. 22, the Panthers (6-3-1, 5-1 NE10) have outscored their opposition, 15-6, in that stretch.
Adelphi is now tied with two other teams in the NE10 for the second-most goals scored this season with 23. Only AIC has more with 31.
While
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca entered the game with four consecutive game-winners, an own goal was the determining factor in tonight's match.
Off the whistle that followed Assumption's then-game-tying goal, Tim De Meij took over on a giveaway and struck the left post, before rhe rebound caromed off a defender and trickled into the net for the go-ahead tally.
Three goals had been scored in a span of 5:41 in the first half, with the last being the own goal.
Benji Jones put the Panthers on the board first in the 15th minute, when his strike from distance found the top shelf, staking the hosts to the first lead of the match.
Although a couple of crucial misses on the doorstep in the second half kept Assumption in it,
Francisco Greco's first goal of his Adelphi career extended his team's lead to 3-1 with 12:53 left.
In goal,
Daniel De La Heras won his fifth start in as many games for the Panthers. He made two saves and ranks among the Top 5 keepers in the conference with only six goals allowed this season.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad are right back at home this Saturday (Oct. 9), when they welcome in Stonehill College for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Motamed Field.
