Garden City, N.Y. - After rallying to a fifth set, the Adelphi University volleyball team unfortunately came up short against Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon, dropping 3-2 decision inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The Panthers (15-9, 4-5 NE10), coming off a strong four-set performance from Friday night, used the momentum to take a 25-17 first set victory from the Skyhawks, who moved into the no. 2 position in the Northeast-10 Conference with a win on Friday as well.
Stonehill managed to bounce back with a set two victory, capitalizing on a 70 percent sideout percentage, and hitting slightly better than the hosting Panthers. They carried that energy into the third set, taking a 25-13 win to move to 2-1 in the contest.
A quick 5-2 Skyhawk lead forced an Adelphi timeout, which they came out of with a three-point stretch of their own sparked by a kill from
Delaney Kiendra. The home team used a 5-1 stretch to even the set at 12-all en route to closing out a 25-21 win.
In a barn-burning affair, Adelphi won the first point in the fifth set, courtesy of a block from
Kambel Fiser and
Samantha Meehan. Overall there were five lead changes and 10 tie scores in the final set, with
Lilyen McCarthy earning the tie at 13-all and 16-all. Pushing into extra points, Stonehill won the final two of the match, to seal the deal inside the CRS.
Adelphi returns to action next weekend for a two-game road trip against Franklin Pierce (Nov. 5) and Southern New Hampshire University (Nov. 6).
