Garden City, N.Y. -- In the team's final league contest of the 2021 season, it took until almost the last minute for the Adelphi University women's soccer team to pull it out.
An 86th-minute winner from
Maria D'Angelo sent the Panthers to a thrilling 1-0 win over Assumption University on Saturday at Motamed Field.
Adelphi is now unbeaten over its last three games (2-0-1) and will play one final non-conference match Monday, before gearing up for the NE10 Tournament.
A pre-game ceremony to recognize the team's ten graduating seniors set the tone for the afternoon.
Adelphi (6-5-3, 6-5-2 NE10) then proceeded to dominate Assumption (6-4-6, 4-3-5 NE10) in shots, corners and possession over the duration of the 90 minutes.
The scoreboard didn't tell the full story though, until the 86th minute. After
Kayla Mushorn made a long run down the right flank, she played a cross towards the center of the box for D'Angelo, who headed the winner past the visiting keeper.
In the final 45 minutes alone, the Panthers outshot the Greyhounds, 12-3. Adelphi also maintained possession at an outstanding 60 percent clip in the contest.
Sarah Hofmeier, who stopped three shots, made her 10th start and posted her third-consecutive shutout in the process. She and the Panthers have not let up a goal in their last 326:14.
Adelphi wraps up the regular season Monday (Nov. 1) against Georgian Court University at 2 p.m. at Motamed Field.
