Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 4 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team will make another trip to the NE10 semifinals, following Wednesday's 4-2 win over fifth-seeded Stonehill College in the first round of the 2021 NE10 Championship at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
The Panthers (9-3) will now look to upset top-seeded Le Moyne in Friday's semifinal round and earn their first trip to the NE10 Championship final since the team's three-peat year of 2017.
The top-doubles team of
Barbie Quagliardi and
Caterina Federici put forth a dominant 6-3 result, which set the tone for
Julia Kielan and
Carolina Chaves to lock down the doubles point with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 pairing.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match, after Quagliardi's convincing 6-1, 6-1 decision in second singles.
While she lost the first set,
Amanda Franstedt came back to pull off an impressive 4-6, 6-4. 6-1 win at the No. 4 flight that put the Panthers on the doorstep of advancing.
After comfortably taking the first set by a 6-2 decision,
Julia Kielan battled Stonehill's Marissa Such to a tightly-contested second set. Although Such rallied to level the set at 5-all, Kielan broke serve and won it the following game on her racket at 40-15.
Adelphi will meet Le Moyne in the NE10 semifinals on Friday (Oct. 22) at 1 p.m. in Syracuse.
