Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Lead Slips Away for Women's Soccer in 4-3 Loss to Pace

Garden City, N.Y. - It was a tale of two halves Wednesday night at Motamed Field, as the Adelphi University women's soccer team suffered a nailbiting 4-3 defeat to Pace University in NE10 action in Garden City.

The loss was Adelphi's (4-5-2, 4-4-1 NE10) first at home since Sept. 18. It had won its last two on home turf and entered the game with a 3-1-1 record at Motamed.

Adelphi made the most of its opportunities in the first 45 minutes and took a 2-1 lead into halftime. It could have been more though.

In fact, the Panthers led 2-0 out of the gate. The scoring opened in the 15th minute, when the hosts were awarded a penalty, after Maria D'Angelo was taken down inside the area.

Marisa Dennis, in search of her first collegiate goal as a fifth-year senior, converted into the left side to give Adelphi an early 1-0 lead.

In the 37th minute, Carly Issing, the team's leading scorer, cleaned up her own rebound off an initial shot that nicked the bottom of the crossbar, making it a 2-0 game.

Jacklyn Lada, who created opportunities all throughout the first half for the Panthers, nearly found the goal too, but her touch off a corner was swept off the line by a Pace defender.

Pace (5-6-3, 3-5-3 NE10), which cut the deficit in half minutes after Issing's goal, kept the momentum going in the second half and erupted for three goals in a span of 4:35.

Despite falling into a 4-2 hole, D'Angelo pulled Adelphi within a goal of tying the score. With 7:55 left in regulation, the striker put home a header off an Issing cross.

Although they dominated possession in the final minutes and pushed the tempo, the Panthers were unable to find the equalizing goal before time expired.

Head Coach Brooke DeRosa and her Adelphi squad are right back at it on Saturday (Oct. 23), when they host Stonehill in another NE10 showdown at Motamed Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
