Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Loss to American Int'l

Garden City, N.Y. - In just its second Northeast-10 Conference contest of the season, the Adelphi University volleyball program went up 2-0 over American International College, but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (11-5, 1-1 NE10) were once again led by Delaney Kiendra and Samantha Meehan, accounting for 15 and 11 kills, respectively, however the host offense was stifled in the final two sets of action, en route to the loss. AIC saw three different players in double-digit kills, with Mai-Lani Hernandez topping the pack with 13.

On defense, Jamie Yonker set a new career-best in digs with 35 as Kambel Fiser managed to collect 40 assists.

Adelphi went up two sets on the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 2-2 NE10) which included a 12-3 start to the second set of the contest. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to four, however the Panthers used several miscues to close out the frame with momentum in their favor.

AIC held a brief lead in the third set, but ball handling errors from the visitors and a kill from Meehan knotted the score at nine-all. After trading points, Adelphi found themselves down by three and despite back-to-back errors to make it a one-point set, the Yellow Jackets scored the final two after a service error from Jaydin Nowak and kill from Hernandez.

The Yellow Jackets used their newfound momentum to command an early lead in the fourth set, and managed to hold the Adelphi attack to a negative hitting percentage despite 44 attempts. In the deciding set, AIC jumped out to a 4-0 lead, forcing Head Coach Danielle Mackinght to call a timeout. After adding two more to their side of the scoreboard, Samantha Collins recorded a kill for their first point of the fifth. Adelphi's next four points only came by way of a service errors from the other side, as AIC took control to close out the game with a 15-6 win.

Macknight and her squad will look to bounce back from two consecutive losses when they trek to Pace University on Tuesday, October 5. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. inside the Ann and Alfred Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center,
