Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore defender
Kayla Mushorn's first collegiate goal was the deciding factor in the Adelphi University women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over American International College in NE10 action Saturday at Motamed Field.
Although Adelphi was outshot 11-7 in the match, Mushorn connected for the only one that counted on the scoreboard.
With the team still maintaining possession in the attacking half, the starting right back launched a long-distance shot towards frame that dipped into the upper-left 90 for what proved to be the game-winner in the 57th minute.
In addition to leveling their conference record at 3-3, the Panthers improved to 3-1-1 at home and have impressively outscored opponents, 8-4, on their own turf.
With the back line taking away some key AIC crosses and through balls, Adelphi had a golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie right before the half though.
Off a stellar cross from Mushorn,
Eleonora D'Angelo was robbed of her second goal in as many games by the right hand of AIC keeper Olivia Sousa.
Sarah Hofmeier was stout in goal in winning her second-straight decision. She made four saves and picked up her first clean sheet of the season. Her goals-against average has dipped to 1.19.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers now hit the road for four straight, beginning Tuesday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m. against University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn.
