Garden City, N.Y. - After a promising set one victory, the Adelphi University volleyball program could not hold back the Chargers from the University of New Haven on Tuesday, ultimately dropping a 3-1 decision inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Led by first years
Noelle Alberda and
Anna Oden with 13 and 14 kills respectively, the Panthers (14-7, 3-3 NE10) were unable to snap the 10-game win streak of their opponent, as New Haven remains the only undefeated team in the Northeast-10 Conference. NE10 Libero of the Week due to her exceptional performance on defense throughout last week, put up another 29 digs to move to 439 on the season.
Back-to-back kills from
Samantha Collins gave the home team a seven-point lead in the opening set, as New Haven struggled to string any points together to cut into the deficit. A 4-1 stretch for the Chargers allowed to to get within three of the hosting Panthers, but Adelphi took four of the final six points to take the set, 25-20.
With a three-point advantage in the second set, the Brown and Gold watched their momentum slip away as the Chargers leveled the frame at 17-all. Six of the next eight points were earned by the opposition, as the Panthers fell victim to errors on offense, culminating in double-digits for the set as New Haven evened the match at 1-1.
Once again, the hosts managed to work themselves into a comfortable lead in the third set - six points - however the visiting team rattled off a 7-2 run to gain their first lead of the set at 20-19, and then some. A block from Alberda and
Lilyen McCarthy proved timely, followed by a kill from the latter to come within two of set-point. A back-and-forth affair down the stretch, New Haven used two kills and an unfortunate error from the Panther side to win 28-26.
Neither team really ran away with the lead in the fourth and final set, until a service error from Adelphi made way for the Chargers to score three consecutive. With the wind our of their sails, the Panthers lost five of the final six points, en route to New Haven remaining undefeated in league action.
Adelphi will break from action for the next week, returning to NE10 action on Tuesday, October 26 when they play Southern Connecticut.
