New Haven, Conn. - Heading into action with an identical conference record, the Adelphi University volleyball team dipped below .500 on Tuesday evening, after dropping three sets to Southern Connecticut inside Pelz Gymnasium.
The Panthers (14-8, 3-4 NE10), who fell 14-25 in the opening set, were held to a team hitting percentage of .139 and led by
Anna Oden who registered nine kills in the loss.
Jaydin Nowak and
Jamie Yonker each collected double-digit digs with 10 and 19, respectively as
Kambel Fiser finished the match with 22 assists.
After dropping the first set 14-25, the visiting Panthers worked out to a four-point led, courtesy of a kill from
Samantha Meehan. The Owls (18-7, 4-3 NE10) rattled off seven unanswered points to regain a three-point advantage, however Adelphi used a 3-1 run, capped with a kill from Oden to even the game at 15-15. After trading points and reaching three more ties, the home team won the final three points to move ahead to 2-0 in the match, securing a 25-21 victory.
The Brown and Gold found themselves trailing by six in the early going of the third set, but used four straight points, starting with a kill from
Brenna Valsted to come within one of the hosting Owls. They experienced two more ties down the stretch, but unfortunately could not extend the conference contest as Southern reached match point - up by three - and closed it out despite a late kill from
Lilyen McCarthy.
Adelphi returns to their home court for back-to-back contests this weekend, starting Friday, Oct. 29 against Bentley. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
