Bronx, N.Y. - On Tuesday, the Adelphi University men's tennis team took the doubles point off Fordham University in a fall showdown against a formidable Division I opponent in the Bronx.
The Panthers, who concluded the fall at 1-1, ultimately took two points from the Rams (2-0), who reached the quarterfinals of the A10 Championship only a season ago.
While Fordham had the upper hand early in doubles, the No. 1 and No. 3 pairs of
Marko Jovanovic and
Gabriel Balestero, and
Thomas Horsley and
Thiago Negrao won by convincing scorelines that staked Adelphi to the early lead.
The tide turned in singles, where the Rams claimed each of the first three matches to finish in straight sets.
Gabriel Balestero kept the Panthers in it with an impressive 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.
Although Jovanovic and
Pietro Sole stepped away in their respective singles matches, the two players each took a set off their opposition first.
At top singles, Jovanovic forced a third set with a 6-3 second-set result. He retired in the thick of a third-set tiebreaker that was level at 3-3. Sole prevailed 6-3 in the first set of his No. 4 singles match.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad will resume in the spring, when they open their traditional spring season on Wednesday, Mar. 2 against University of the Sciences at 1 p.m. in Garden City.
