Volleyball Stops Saint Rose in Spirit Weekend Battle, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - Using extra points in the second set, the Adelphi University volleyball team rallied and secured a home court victory against the College of Saint Rose on Saturday, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports. 

Samantha Meehan led all players with 10 kills as Kambel Fiser accounted for 34 assists in the win. Defensively, Jamie Yonker collected 28 digs as Jamaya Harris and Fiser each chipped in 10 apiece. 

A kill by Katie Schloss sparked a 5-0 run for the Panthers (14-6, 3-2 NE10) that put them ahead 12-4; a margin they maintained throughout the remainder of the set, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Adelphi led 20-17 in the second frame but a 5-1 stretch for the Golden Knights (6-13, 1-5 NE10) put them ahead by one. Saint Rose got to set point at 24-22, but back-to-back blocks from the Panther front line evened theg ame at 24-all. Noelle Alberda and Lilyen McCarthy were responsible for extra point kills later in the set, as McCarthy and Schloss accounted for the final gamewinners. 

The final frame went much like the first as the home team found themselves ahead 12-4 in the early going. They led by at most six, and closed out a 25-18 win to win their second straight and third in conference play. 

The team is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 19 when they host University of New Haven at 7:00 p.m. In conjunction with the first day of the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion week, the program will be selling Pride t-shirts ($25) with all proceeds benefiting the Adelphi LGBTQ+ and Allies Excellence Fund.
