Garden City, N.Y. - With the playoffs looming, the Adelphi University women's tennis team handled Saint Anselm College, 7-0, in its final NE10 regular-season match of the 2021-22 campaign Saturday in Garden City.
As teams were still jostling for playoff position on the season's final day, the Panthers (8-3, 7-3 NE10) clinched the No. 4 seed and a first-round home match with today's result.
Adelphi will host No. 5 seed Stonehill College Wednesday (Oct. 20) at 1 p.m. in NE10 Championship first-round action. In their regular-season meeting on Sept. 11, the Panthers shut out the Skyhawks, 7-0.
The hosts comfortably went through the motions in doubles, where Adelphi lost only five games between the three matches.
With the return of a full squad,
Barbie Quagliardi and
Caterina Federici, and
Julia Kielan and
Carolina Chaves won by identical 6-1 decisions at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights, respectively.
Amanda Franstedt and
Louisa Junghanns prevailed 6-3 in second doubles.
The results were similar in singles competition. Each of the first four contests finished in straight sets. The match was capped by a pair of eight-game pro-sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights.
Junghanns ran her winning streak at top singles to five straight with a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Quagliardi came back to the lineup and posted a convincing 6-0, 6-1 result in No. 2 singles.
Franstedt (6-3, 6-1) and Kielan (6-1, 6-1) both moved up a spot and claimed victory in straight sets. Chaves made just her third appearance at No. 5 singles this season and won 8-3.
Jenelle Downer put up an 8-0 shutout in the No. 6 slot.
