Garden City, N.Y. - Despite playing shorthanded, the Adelphi University women's tennis team still claimed a 5-2 result over NE10 foe Saint Michael's College on Thursday afternoon at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
A win in Adelphi's regular-season finale on Saturday (Oct. 16) against Saint Anselm will guarantee the Panthers hosting rights in the first round of the upcoming NE10 Tournament.
In a match that took less than three hours to conclude, the Panthers (7-3, 6-3 NE10) first captured the doubles point and were well on their way.
Despite defaulting at third doubles, first-time partners
Louisa Junghanns and
Caterina Federici and
Julia Kielan and
Jenelle Downer both won convincingly for Adelphi by respective 6-1 and 6-3 counts.
In singles, the hosts defaulted again at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, but Adelphi prevailed in the four contested matches.
Junghanns (6-1, 6-1), Federici (6-1, 6-0) and Kielan (6-0, 6-0) only dropped a combined three games at the top three flights. Downer also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Panthers will wrap up the fall against Saint Anselm on Saturday (Oct. 16) at 11 a.m. in Garden City.
