Garden City, N.Y. - On Tuesday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team was the tough-luck loser in a 5-2 contest against Franklin Pierce University at the Adelphi Tennis Courts.
The loss dips the Panthers to 5-3 in NE10 play and puts them in a tie for fourth place with Stonehill in the conference stansings. As a result of Adelphi's head-to-head regular-season win on Sept. 11, the Panthers currently hold the tiebreaker.
Adelphi only has two more regular-season matches remaining before the start of the NE10 Tournament next Wednesday (Oct. 20). A sweep of the two matches would ensure a first-round home match for the Brown and Gold.
Although
Julia Kielan and
Carolina Chaves improved to a spectacular 8-1 in dual doubles competition this season, the Panthers fell short in their pursuit of the doubles point.
While Kielan and Chaves won 6-3 at third doubles, Adelphi's other two pairs lost to their opposition by the same scoreline.
In singles,
Louisa Junghanns and Chaves accounted for the two wins on the day for the Panthers.
Junghanns won a three-set decision (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) at the top flight. Chaves prevailed at No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Barbie Quagliardi took the first set at No. 2 singles, but came out on the short end of a 6-3, 3-6, 5-7 decision.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad are back at it Thursday (Oct. 14) against Saint Michael's College in an NE10 clash at 1 p.m. in Garden City.
