Celebrating Ten Years in the NE10: Men's Soccer Returns to Division II Status

8/20/2020 3:00:00 PM

Garden City, N.Y. - The 2019-20 season marked our 10th year in the NE10, and to celebrate that milestone, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics is looking back on some of its most iconic moments and accomplishments with the conference.

When the Adelphi men's soccer team reclassified as an NCAA Division I program in 1976, it left behind a 20-year legacy in Division II that included the school's first-ever national championship in 1974.

In August 2012, the University announced that the program would make its triumphant return to the NCAA Division II stage in 2013 -- signaling the 2012 season as the last for Adelphi in Division I.

From 1976-2012, the Panthers, under the leadership of acclaimed head coaches Bob Montgomery and Carlo Acquista, posted 21 winning seasons as a Division I program, with four 14-win seasons between 1985-90.

Montgomery, a 1994 inductee of the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame, concluded his storied 30-year career (1978-2007) as the program's all-time winningest head coach with a 258-223-39 record.

Acquista took over the reins in 2007 and led the Panthers to three conference championships as a Division I program, as a member of the now-defunct Atlantic Soccer Conference. He was named the ASC Coach of the Year three times in four seasons (2008, 2009, 2011) and penciled the ASC Player of the Year into his starting lineup in three consecutive campaigns.

Since their return to NCAA Division II, the Panthers have overtaken the NE10 and East Region, to the tune of four NE10 regular-season championships, two NE10 Tournament titles, five NCAA Tournament bids and a pair of NCAA East Region Championships (2016, 2018).

In just seven years in the NE10, Adelphi has posted a 70-14-6 record against conference opponents, translating to a startling .811 winning percentage. The Panthers boast a 101-29-11 overall record (.755 winning percentage) since their move back to Division II.

Adelphi's 19-1-2 season in 2016 broke a 30-year-old single-season record for wins and led to Acquista earning his first-ever NE10 Coach of the Year nod. Acquista was twice named the NE10 Coach of the Year in his time at Adelphi, before Gary Book received the same honor in 2019, following a near-perfect 10-1-1 finish in NE10 regular-season play.

Three different Panthers have been named the NE10 Player of the Year since 2016, and two have garnered NE10 Rookie of the Year praise in the last four seasons. Alejandro Penzini, the program's last CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2016, received NE10 Defensive Player of the Year distinction that same season.
