Garden City, N.Y. - Now that grade reports are finalized, marking the conclusion of the school year, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that the combined grade-point average of over 400 student-athletes stands at 3.445 for 2019-20.
The spring semester was moved to entirely remote learning after spring break this year, serving up adversity to the department to adjust to a virtual environment. Students were offered the opportunity to choose a pass/no credit option for their classes, but a very small percentage of athletes chose that route for some or all of their scheduled courses.
The field hockey program boasted the highest team GPA for 2019-20, checking in at 3.832 with an astounding 12 4.0s in the spring semester alone. On the women's side, 54 student-athletes achieved a perfect GPA in the spring, adding to the men's 20 for a total of 74.
The bowling team was top three on the women's side, following the field hockey program with a 3.820 combined GPA. The keglers will learn next month if they are tops in the country in GPA, based on the release of the academic awards from the National Tenpin Coaches Association.
Leading the men's side in combined GPA for the 2019-20 season was men's tennis, who was third in the department at 3.801. They led the men's teams in overall GPA and had the highest in both semesters.
In all, 21 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.00 GPA in 2019-20, including rookie Roodginia Guierrier, who was the only member of the women's track program to boast the feat.
The Northeast-10 Conference will be releasing its biannual Commissioner's Honor Roll before June is through, and the department anticipates strong numbers from the group.
