Jan Phyl Village, Fla. - In its return to the PFX Spring Games on Friday, the Adelphi University softball team fell 6-1 to Grand Valley State University and 4-2 to Truman State University at the Auburndale Softball Complex in Jan Phyl Village.
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Grand Valley State 6
The Panthers (2-5) weren't able to get much going against Grand Valley's Hannah Beatus, who only allowed one hit in her seven innings of work.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Adelphi put the tying runs on base, after
Elisabeth Berard and
Emily Turney both earned walks.
Abbey Fortin, the team's clean-up hitter, then stepped to the plate as the go-ahead run with two outs, but popped out on a 1-2 pitch.
GVSU tacked on four more runs in their half of the sixth to pull away. The Panthers got a run back in their final turn at-bat on a
Kailah Konkel sacrifice fly, but it wasn't enough.
Ally Muller took the loss in the decision for the Panthers. She did strike out a pair and let up only one walk.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Truman State 4
Adelphi (2-6) broke through first in the bottom of the second. After
Megan Sneeden ripped a one-out double and a
Laurén Shambo single advanced her to third, Konkel produced an RBI off an infield single that staked the Panthers to an early lead.
Nicole Mengel was impressive through her first four innings. Despite allowing a game-tying homer to Adrienne Compton in the fourth, she retired 12 of the first 16 batters to face her.
The Panthers had an opportunity to re-take the lead in their half of the fourth. Sneeden led off the frame with a single and subsequently stole second, before a fielding error advanced her to third with one out.
With the go-ahead run only 60 feet away,
Amanda Owens laid down a squeeze that was unable to allow Sneeden to break from third.
Allie Laird then popped up to third base to end the threat.
Truman State capitalized, as a three-run fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Alyssa Rivera, put the Bulldogs up 4-1.
Adelphi got one of those runs back in the seventh on an RBI single by Turney. The Panthers would bring the tying run to the plate in their final turn at-bat, but Fortin and
Hannah Pineda both hit into forceouts to end the game.
