Oceanside, N.Y. - In its first home match of the 2020 campaign, the Adelphi University men's tennis team came up short in a 5-2 loss to University of the Sciences in non-conference action Saturday at the Point Set Indoor Racquet Club in Oceanside.
The Panthers (0-3) fell into an early 1-0 hole in the contest, after dropping all three doubles flights by identical 6-4 scorelines.
The first singles match to finish was at the No. 2 position, where
Gabriel Balestero, after losing the first set 6-2, dropped a hard-fought second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier rallied from a set down to win 6-3 in the second, but fell 6-4 in the decisive third set at No. 4 singles.
David Robres de Veciana got Adelphi on the board with a thrilling three-set win (3-6, 6-2, 10-5) at fifth singles, and
Henrique Souza followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in sixth singles to cap off the day.

Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers now start conference play, as they square off with Saint Michael's College in their NE10 opener on Friday (Mar. 6) at 3 p.m. in Garden City.
