Oceanside, N.Y. - On Friday, the Adelphi University men's tennis team opened up its conference slate with a 5-2 victory over Saint Michael's College at the Point Set Indoor Racquet Club in Oceanside.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Panthers (1-3, 1-0 NE10) battled to win five of six singles matches, en route to capturing their first win of the 2020 season. It is also the first win in
Rebecca Fakas' tenure as head coach.
Trailing 2-1 in the match,
Luke Attride-Stirling evened things up with a 7-5, 6-2 straight-set decision over Josh Weiss at the No. 2 flight.
Gabriel Balestero played two tiebreakers with Connor Scott at the top-singles flight and won both by identical 7-4 scorelines to put Adelphi ahead.
Henrique Souza clinched it for the Brown and Gold with a 6-3, 6-2 win in straight sets at No. 6 singles.
David Leader went the distance with Constantin Krogh at fifth singles, rallying from a set down to win 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5.
Fakas and the Panthers return to action Thursday (Mar. 12), when they square off with College of Staten Island at 1 p.m. in Staten Island.
