Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a 94-78 loss to Southern Connecticut inside the Center for Recreation and Sports Tuesday evening, the Adelphi University men's basketball team has locked in the no. 2 seed ahead of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, slated to begin on Friday.
Adelphi (18-10, 11-8 NE10), earns the spot after finishing in a tie with the Owls (16-10, 11-8) due to a split during their regular season series. The Panthers held a 1-1 record against Le Moyne, who earned the top seed, whereas the Owls went 0-2 against the Dolphins this season.
Both teams saw four different players score double digits, with
Ronnie Silva once again leading the home team offense with 25 points.
Austin Beech, who was recognized prior to the regular season finale as the lone graduating senior, had a balanced performance, chipping in 14 points while pulling down seven rebounds and adding six assists.
The hosts were held to 40 percent shooting in the opening half, taking 24 of their 35 from beyond the arc as the Owls only led by at-most eight in the early going.
Chris Coalmon, who added 13 points in the loss, drained back-to-back three-pointers at 14:05 to cut the Southern Connecticut lead to two, and tied it up at 41-all with another tre at nearly the one minute mark.
It was the visiting offense that got in the last word of the half, as CJ Seaforth knocked down a shot from downtown to lead narrowly by three at the break.
A stretch of eight unanswered points for Adelphi allowed them to lead by four at 11:51 left in the second, but Southern Connecticut responded with nine points to regain the momentum. Closing out the half, the Owls stretched their advantage to double-digits, a margin that the Panthers were unable to overcome.
The Brown and Gold pick up a first round bye and will host no. 3 Franklin Pierce out of the Northeast Division on Sunday, March 1. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. Earlier in the season, the Ravens defeated Adelphi 91-65, its largest margin of defeat this season.
