Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker in NE10 Quarterfinals

Garden City, N.Y. - It came down to the final possession for the Adelphi University men's basketball team, but they ultimately fell to Franklin Pierce 76-74 in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament inside the Center for Recreation and Sports Sunday afternoon.

Four of the five starters for the Panthers (18-11) reached double-digit scoring, led by Ronnie Silva, who accounted for 21.

Adelphi trailed for all of the first half, coming as close as one point on several occasions, courtesy of buckets from senior Austin Beech. The Ravens (16-11,10-9 NE10) held a 11-0 advantage in bench points for the frame, and were led by starter Isaiah Moore who collected 11 points in the first 20 minutes of action.

Neither team shot great from the field and more specifically three point range in the first frame, as Adelphi went 1-15 from beyond the arc and Franklin Pierce only knocked down five on 20 attempts. As a result, the Brown and Gold trailed the Ravens by eight after the visitors scored six unanswered to close out the half.

Spencer Foley started the second half with a shot from beyond the arc in the hopes to get the offense going, however a 9-2 stretch in favor of Franklin Pierce saw them jump out to a double-digit lead. The momentum quickly shifted however, as a driving layup from Chris Coalmon sparked a 16-3 run in favor of the home team to give Adelphi it's first lead of the contest at 13:28.

Over the ensuing ten minutes the teams battled to go on any sort of run, but kept it within single digits as the Ravens led by at-most seven points with 3:13 left on the clock. Austin Beech drove in for a basket and Foley knocked down another shot from beyond the arc at the 45 second mark, but even with a defensive rebound and another shot at the basket, Adelphi came up short, dropping a 76-74 final decision.

The Panthers were pitted tenth in the first installment of the NCAA Division II regional rankings, behind no. 9 Franklin Pierce, released last week.
