Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Pollock Nets Game-Winner, Women's Lax Hands #7 Rollins First Loss

Winter Park, Fla. - It was the equalizer from Lena Riportella and the gamewinner from Kole Pollock that lifted no. 1 Adelphi women's lacrosse to a 13-12 overtime victory against no. 7 Rollins College Sunday afternoon at Cahall-Sandspur Field, giving the Tars their first loss of the 2020 season.

With 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Lena Riportella cut around a Rollins defender and received a pass from Pollock who narrowly fed it to the middle, to net the eventual goal that sent the contest to overtime, knotting the game at 12-12. The Tars (3-1) managed to win the draw control but were stopped at the other end by Adelphi keeper Emma Lemanski, who  finished the contest with 10 saves in the victory.

It didn't take long in the ensuing overtime period as a timely draw control win from Kristina Kallansrude gave Adelphi the fist possession. After drawing up a play on an early timeout, Pollock took it to the left side and drove to the goal, taking a successful shot past Rollins goalkeeper Gabby Tanner, who only saved four shots in the contest.

Majority of the opening half was all-Tars as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 14 minutes of action. In that stretch, Alyssa Gillespie notched the team's first strike of the afternoon, but it was Alison Johnson's unassisted tally that sparked a four-goal run to give the Panthers (2-1) their first lead of the game. Christina McCabe notched the fifth goal and was responsible for the next three goals (in the second half) after the Brown and Gold found themselves down by two at half.

McCabe's three goals came in a span that brought the visitors within one, however Rollins continued to add on to their lead as time continued to dwindle. Fiona Rafferty cooly recorded her first career goal which left the Panthers still trailing by two, but Pollock netted back-to-back goals to come within one and then assisted Riportella for the equalizer.

Defensively, the Panthers were led by Alex Beebe who wreaked havoc in the Tars offensive zone, causing four turnovers and collecting a team-high five ground balls.

The Tars have yet to defeat the perennial powers from Long Island, as Adelphi leads the series 6-0, while Rollins falls to 1-5 all-time against No. 1 ranked opponents.

Adelphi returns north for their Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday, February 29. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Motamed Field.
