Garden City, N.Y. - With the help of hat tricks from both
Christina McCabe and
Lena Riportella, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team managed to stave off Stonehill College Saturday afternoon, in a 10-5 win at Motamed Field.
McCabe led the Panthers (3-1, 1-0 NE10) with six points after adding three assists to her three goals as four other players found the back of the cage. Defensively, Kerry Flavin was responsible for a team-best four caused turnovers and added five won draw controls and three ground balls.
Emma Lemanski earned her third win and first conference victory with five saves.
The Skyhawks (0-1, 0-1 NE10) were led by Shannon Hughes who tallied her own hat trick, and got the visitors on the board first in the opening half. McCabe's back-to-back goals gave Adelphi their first lead of the contest at 11:58, which sparked a seven goal run for the Panthers that trickled into the second half. McCabe found
Alison Johnson who broke away from her defender to score the last goal in the first frame which saw Stonehill trailing by three at the break.
Adelphi scored the first three goals coming out of halftime and kept the Skyhawks quiet until Kaity Healey converted a free position attempt to start a three-goal run for the opponents. All five of Stonehill's goals in the contest came from free position shots, including their last one in a man-up possession.
Up by three with less than two minutes remaining in regulation,
Gianna Bifulco jumped in on the scoring and Riportella added one more with under a minute to go in the contest.
The Panthers more than doubled the shot attempts taken by Stonehill while leading in clear attempts, ground balls, and narrowly in draw controls.
Adelphi will hit the road for an out-of-region contest in two weeks featuring East Stroudsburg on Saturday, March 14. The Warriors were ranked 12th in this week's IWLCA Division II poll.
