West Haven, Conn. - Ronnie Silva became the 38th player in Adelphi University men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career-point threshold Saturday afternoon, despite the Panthers 67-61 loss inside Charger Gymnasium to the University of New Haven.
Silva, who finished with a team-leading 24 points, scored his 1,000th courtesy of a three pointer just six minutes into the contest to complete the feat in under two seasons in 56 games.
Spencer Foley was red-hot for Adelphi (18-9, 10-7 NE10) at the start, making all six of his first six attempts and finished with 23 points and seven rebounds. New Haven (12-13,10-9 NE10) saw three different players in double-figures and held their opponents to 20 points under their season average, and secured one of five spots from the NE10 Southwest Division for the upcoming conference championship.
Adelphi led for over 10 minutes in the opening frame, until an 11-2 run in favor of the home team, capped at 4:58, gave the Chargers a five-point edge. Foley knocked down two three-pointers in the ensuing time, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit before halftime as New Haven racked up eight unanswered points of their own to close out the half.
The Panthers managed to score seven points right out of the break to even the game at 40-all, but a brief stretch for the hosts put them narrowly back in the lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Chargers outscored Adelphi at the free throw line, connecting on 11-of-16 attempts while limiting the Panthers to just seven three throw attempts all game. New Haven also led the battle in points off turnovers, 11-4, while all 61 of the Panthers points came from their starting five while the Chargers collected 30 points from its bench players.
With one game remaining, the Brown and Gold will host Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Prior to tip-off, the department will recognize the accomplishments of the lone senior,
Austin Beech.
Adelphi still remains second in the Southwest Division despite the loss today, but the Owls defeated Saint Rose today to move into third.
