Garden City, N.Y. - It took five extra minutes, but the No. 10 Adelphi University women's basketball team won its first NE10 Southwest Division regular-season title since the 2016-17 season with a 63-59 overtime victory against Pace University at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday night.
With two regular-season games still remaining, the Panthers (24-2, 15-2 NE10) have cemented themselves as the Southwest Division's No. 1 seed in the NE10 Tournament. Adelphi can clinch home-court advantage throughout the playoffs with a win at New Haven on Saturday and a Stonehill loss against Southern New Hampshire. The Skyhawks, the NE10 Northeast Division leaders, trail the Panthers by a half game in the standings with a 15-3 league record.
Trailing 54-51 with time dwindling in the contest,
Fallyn Stephens buried a game-tying three-pointer with 36 seconds left. Prior to that make, Stephens drew a pivotal charge against Pace's Jackie DelliSanti to keep it a one-possession game.
Stephens would also have an opportunity to win the game in regulation. After
Leonie Edringer came up with a key block on the ensuing possession, Stephens put up a shot as time expired, but her lay-up attempt missed the mark.
In the overtime period, Edringer and
Emily Miccile both sank buckets to give Adelphi a 60-56 advantage with 1:11 left. However, DelliSanti converted a three-point play to pull the Setters (18-8, 11-6 NE10) within a point at the 15-second mark.
Edringer made two crucial free throws after an Adelphi timeout to extend the hosts' lead to 62-59 and a subsequent three-point miss by Pace's Lauren Hackett on the following possession sealed the Panthers' eighth-consecutive victory.
While Adelphi came away with the win, the Panthers trailed at halftime (32-28) at home for the first time this year. In total, the Brown and Gold have only trailed at the half just three times this season (Dec. 15 at East Stroudsburg; Jan. 18 at Saint Anselm).
Edringer collected her third double-double in four games, totaling 22 points and 13 rebounds. She was 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 at the line.
Katie Murphy fell two assists shy of a triple-double. She had 15 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Stephens scored 10 points, while
Emma Cuccurullo pulled down 10 rebounds.
Head Coach
Missy Traversi and her Adelphi squad are back in action Saturday (Feb. 22), when they play their final regular-season road game of the season at NE10 rival University of New Haven. Tip-off from West Haven, Conn. is set for 1:30 p.m.
