Men's Basketball Staves Off SCSU With Late Comeback

New Haven, Conn. - After trailing for majority of the Northeast-10 Conference matchup, the Adelphi University men's basketball team held Southern Connecticut to single-digit scoring over the final six minutes, en route to a 90-80 victory, Wednesday evening to move to 5-1 in league play.

Led by the league's player of the week, Ronnie Silva, the Panthers (12-3, 5-1 NE10) shot nearly sixty percent from the field in the second half, as he accounted for 27 points and 11 assists to complete the double-double. Chris Coalmon and Spencer Foley also found themselves in double-digits, combining for six three-pointers to contribute 23 and 17 points, respectively. Foley also notched his first double-double in a Panther uniform, pulling down 10 rebounds.

The game started out as a back-and-forth affair for the opening four minutes of action, until Southern Connecticut's Greg Jones used a three-pointer at the start and end of a 9-2 run to lead by seven. The Brown and Gold managed to come within one two different times throughout the first half, and actually regained the lead on a Coalmon jumper, overcoming a 10-point deficit.

The Owls' Taurus Adams III knocked down back-to-back free throws to put the home team ahead by one, which led to a scoring freeze from the visitors, who missed the next five three-point attempts. Silva cut the Adelphi deficit to seven as time expired in the first, knocking down his third three-pointer of the frame.

Andrew Delaney recorded a layup that brought the Panthers within one at 15:59 in the second half, but a 7-2 stretch for Southern Connecticut allowed them to maintain their lead.

Foley turned on the scoring in the second half, ultimately shooting 5-8 in the frame, as he knocked down back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to help the visiting team gain momentum. His layup, coupled with a basket from Tim Delaney sent Adelphi on a 13-3 run with 2:02 left where they held a nine-point advantage over the Owls. Late foul trouble for the home team saw Silva go 6-6 from the charity stripe in the remaining minute, to complete the comeback and earn Adelphi its seventh consecutive victory.

The men's basketball program welcomes Southern New Hampshire State University to the Center for Recreation and Sports on Saturday, Jan. 8 for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
