Garden City, NY - After a rough start to the game, it was a last second buzzer beater by
Ronnie Silva that lifted the men's basketball team over the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, 76-74. The Panthers (13-3, 8-1 NE-10) erased a 17 point deficit early in the first and 49 point second half to seal the deal on their victory in front of the home crowd Saturday afternoon.
The Brown and Gold got a big boost on offense from four of their players who posted double-digit scoring in the win. Silva's last second bucket capped a 19 point game while nine of
Spencer Foley's 18 points came from behind the arc. A big presence in the middle,
Tim Delaney added 16 points while
Chris Coalmon rounded out the quartet with 11 points.
In the opening 10:55, the Panthers could not seem to get their offense going and went just 3-15 from the field, resulting in a 24-7 deficit. However, they turned it around on both ends of the court. Defensively, they forced four turnovers and held the visitors scoreless from three-point land while the offense found their stroke, connecting on 6-14 from the floor and finding success from behind the arc going 4-9. Over the final 9:05, they closed on a 20-5 run to head into halftime down just two at 29-27.
A quick trey from Foley to open the second gave Adelphi their first lead of the game. From that point, it was an evenly played affair with either team going ahead by more than six points.
Andrew Delaney made a tough layup down low with 3:19 showing and on the ensuing possession, on a selfless, fast break feed from Foley,
Owen Soontjens knocked down a three from the corner to give Adelphi a late 73-67 advantage.
The Penmen rattled off five unanswered points to pull within a point with 18 seconds left to play. Silva connected on one of two from the foul line but SNHU's Shawn Montague drove to the basket for a hard earned deuce to tie the game at 74 with just under six seconds left to play.
A time out from
Dave Duke advanced the ball down court. Foley inbounded to Silva who dribbled across court and took the final shot of the game as time expired and found the bottom of the hoop for the win.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, January 14 when they host the Skyhawks of Stonehill College at the CRS. Tip-off is scheduled for a 3:30pm start.
