Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 15 Adelphi University women's basketball team returned to league play Saturday afternoon with a 70-66 win over Northeast-10 Conference rival University of New Haven at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City.

The victory increases the Panthers' season-opening winning streak to 14 games, surpassing the previous longest streak of 13 consecutive wins to open the year in the 2014-15 campaign.

Adelphi (14-0, 5-0 NE10) got out to as hot of a start as it could and closed out the first quarter with a commanding 29-14 lead. Eight of the Panthers' nine makes from the field in the period were from downtown, including a half-court buzzer-beater by Leonie Edringer as time expired.

The Brown and Gold shot a sizzling 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the field and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range in the first quarter.

Adelphi grew its lead to as many as 19 points in the second quarter, before taking a 45-30 lead into halftime. Over the first 20 minutes of play, 11 of the hosts' 14 baskets came from beyond the arc. Six different Panthers netted threes in the first half.

New Haven (10-2, 4-2 NE10) slowly inched its way back into the game in the second half though. Despite trailing by as many as 21 points, the Chargers closed the gap to an 11-point game in the third quarter and trailed 57-44 heading into the final period.

UNH carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, where it twice came a single basket of tying the game on four separate occasions. However, a key pair of baskets in the final minutes by Katie Murphy, coupled with a 3-for-4 showing at the line by Edringer, shut the door on New Haven.

Emily Miccile finished with a career-high 19 points in the effort, while Murphy poured in 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Murphy also had seven assists and five steals. Julia Strachan nailed three treys, en route to a 12-point day. Jess Camarda added nine points, while Fallyn Stephens and Edringer chipped in eight and five points, respectively. Edringer pulled down 10 rebounds and swiped two steals, as well.

Head Coach Missy Traversi and her Adelphi squad are back in action Wednesday (Jan. 8), when they face Southern Connecticut State University in an NE10 tilt at 5:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
