Garden City, N.Y. - A game that was tied 39-39 at the half, the No. 13 Adelphi University women's basketball team came on strong in the second half Wednesday night to beat Saint Michael's College, 83-64, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City.
In the final 20 minutes, the Panthers (19-2, 10-2 NE10) outscored the Purple Knights (8-10, 2-10 NE10) by a 44-25 count. Of those 44 points, almost half of them (19) came on second-chance opportunities.
Adelphi dominated Saint Michael's on the offensive glass, 23-9, which led to a 27-4 differential in second-chance points in the contest. The Panthers also turned 22 turnovers into 22 points.
Leading 50-49 with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter, the Brown and Gold ended the period on an 8-0 spurt to widen the gap to 58-49.
Emma Cuccurullo accounted for the first three points of the run.
Julia Strachan, who led all players with 23 points on the evening, followed with one of her game-high seven three-pointers.
Katie Murphy closed it out with a bucket at the 57-second mark.
While the Purple Knights managed to come within five (58-53) early in the fourth quarter, the Panthers answered with a 20-5 burst that spread the lead to 20 points (78-58) with 2:37 left and put the game away.
In addition to Strachan's fourth 20-point game of the season,
Emily Miccile posted her third double-double of the year, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Leonie Edringer had 14 points and six rebounds. Murphy finished just shy of a triple-double with nine points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Cuccurullo came down with nine rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and scored five points in the effort.
Jess Camarda added eight points and four steals.
