Garden City, N.Y - The Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a 16-point defeat Wednesday evening inside the Center for Recreation and Sports, as Saint Michael's College used a 54-29 second-half scoring surge en route to a 79-63 victory.
Even in the loss, four Panther players notched double-digit performances, led by
Ronnie Silva who accounted for 15 as
Chris Coalmon and
Spencer Foley both chipped in 10 apiece.
Austin Beech's stat line read 15 points alongside a new career-high five steals, three assists and two blocks. For the Purple Knights (6-13,3-8 NE10) Kasai Brown was 7-for-11 from the field with a game-high 25 points as teammate Eli DiGrande set a new career-mark in points with 23.
Beech had four points in a 10-2 response to Saint Mike's early 4-3 edge, that put Adelphi (14-7, 7-5 NE10) up 13-6 with 14:35 left in the first half. Quick to retort, the Purple Knights rattled off nine unanswered tallies, which accounted for the fourth of seven lead swings in the opening frame alone.
Adelphi wiped out the 15-13 deficit with seven straight points from three scorers, but Brown and DiGrande split scoring duties in an 8-0 response that created a 23-20 lead by 6:34 for the visiting team. The Panthers were responsible for the next nine points as
Jared Rivers knocked down a pair of three-pointers as the run reached 14-2 by the end of the half to give the home team a 34-25 lead at the break.
Saint Michael's opened the second frame with vengeance as Adelphi's scoring turned cold, using a 34-8 run to lead by 17 - an upper hand the Purple Knights did not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Foely's three-pointer with 8:29 to go in regulation brought the hosts within 13, but Adelphi came no closer as the visitors knocked down six shots from beyond the arc and went 10-for-13 at the charity stripe.
Adelphi men's basketball looks to snap their two-game losing streak on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they travel to take on the Falcons of Bentley University.
