Manchester, N.H. - On Saturday, the No. 12 Adelphi University women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 72-61 loss to Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
The Panthers (16-2, 7-2 NE10) trailed 35-18 midway through the second quarter, but ended the half on a 14-2 run to trim the deficit to a five-point game at the half.
Adelphi made five of its first six shots in the stretch, which included a lay-up and three-point play from
Emily Miccile.
Emma Cuccurullo hit a pair of freebies to bring the visitors within two possessions at 37-32.
The Panthers carried that momentum in the third quarter and quickly tied the score at 37-all just 1:38 in, on a three-pointer by
Julia Strachan.
Saint Anselm (11-4, 7-2 NE10) never relinquished the lead for the entirety of the game though. The Hawks re-took the lead on two Grace Guachione free throws with 6:07 left in the third quarter and did not look back.
The Panthers twice came within a basket of re-tying the game, but Saint Anselm eventually built its lead back up to double digits and Adelphi was unable to recover.
Strachan and
Katie Murphy led the Brown and Gold with 11 points apiece. Murphy also grabbed seven rebounds and dished six assists. Miccile and
Jess Camarda each had nine points. Cuccurullo provided eight points, five rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes off the bench.
Head Coach
Missy Traversi and her Adelphi squad return to action Wednesday (Jan. 22), when they welcome in NE10 foe Assumption College for a 5:30 p.m. opening tip at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y.
