Women's Soccer Shuts Out Wilmington in 2019 Opener, 2-0

Garden City, N.Y. - It was a goal in each half that propelled the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 2-0 season-opening win against Wilmington University in non-conference action at Motamed Field Sunday night in Garden City.

Though the Wildcats (1-1) led in shots after the first 45 minutes, the Panthers (1-0) broke through for the only goal of the half in the 17th minute.

It would take three tries in a span of four seconds for the shot to go. Sophomore midfielder Jacklyn Lada and freshman forward Hailey Franco were both thwarted by Wilmington's defensive front, before Lada's second attempt re-directed off a Wildcat defender into the upper-left 90 for the game's opening goal.

Wilmington had an opportunity to pull even before halftime, but Adelphi sophomore keeper Krista Aliscio came off her line to deny a breakaway for Krysta Memis in the 37th minute. WU sophomore midfielder Cassidy McErlain also lined a shot off the right post just minutes earlier.

The Panthers, who took a 1-0 lead into the break, wouldn't offer the Wildcats much breathing room in the second half. Adelphi held its opposition to one shot over the final 45 minutes.

Additionally, the Panthers converted for a key insurance goal in the 75th minute. Off a throw-in, senior forward Kerianne Scorce dribbled past two defenders, before finding the left-side netting from just right of the six-yard box.

AU's Alexsis Weiser led all players with five shots on the night. Lada and Scorce had three shots apiece. Aliscio made four saves between the pipes for the Panthers.

Head Coach Brooke DeRosa and her Adelphi squad are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 11), when they meet Mercy College in a non-conference showdown at 12 noon in Dobbs Ferry.
