Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Comes Up Short at Mercy, 1-0

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Despite outshooting the Mavericks by an overwhelming 17-5 count, the Adelphi University women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of 2019 against Mercy College, 1-0, on Wednesday at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry.

The Panthers (1-1) had their fair share of opportunities in the match, putting more than half (9) of their total shots on target.

In the first half, Mercy (2-1) junior goalkeeper Melissa Torres stood tall to turn away a flurry of four Adelphi shots in a near four-minute span. That stretch included an Erica Bleimeyer volley off a corner kick that was cleared off the line by a Maverick defender.

The Panthers continued to look for the equalizer in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the 63rd minute, Kerianne Scorce settled a long pass inside the 18-yard box from Juliana Klaum and went 1-on-1 with Torres. However, Mercy defender Trista Seara kept Scorce's shot out to preserve the hosts' one-goal lead.

Torres would earn the shutout for the Mavericks, making nine saves. Sophomore keeper Krista Aliscio stopped two shots for the Panthers.

The only goal of the match came early, as Mercy scored what was the deciding tally in the sixth minute. Just 5:07 in, Sydney Cooper headed a Natalia Elizararras corner kick into the six-yard box, which Seara finished for the game's only score.

Scorce led all players with six shots on the afternoon. AU's Alexsis Weiser had four shots -- all of which were on target.

Head Coach Brooke DeRosa and her Adelphi squad now return home to face No. 8 Southern New Hampshire University in their 2019 Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday (Sept. 14) at 3 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City.
