Garden City, N.Y.- The Adelphi University field hockey team used a goal from
Danielle Kempf with under a minute remaining to defeat no. 7 Kutztown University, 2-1, in its season opener Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (0-1) held an advantage in shots for the contest, with a 10-6 mark on goal, during which rookie
Angelina Saunders only allowed one tally and amassed nine saves to kick off her career.
After a silent first half, Kutztown's Rose Moore scored in the fifth minute of the third quarter, assisted by Kyra Wozniak. Saunders held off the visitors with five saves in the remainder of the third frame.
The Panthers (1-0) responded early in the fourth, as
Jackie Brown one-timed into the cage on a cross from the right of the circle by freshman
Giana McKeough. With the game tied, Saunders put up another big stop on a shot from Wozniak.
Fighting until the very end of regulation, Kempf nailed the gamewinner in the fifty-ninth minute to defeat the nationally ranked Golden Bears 2-1. Her tally came on a put back rebound following a shot from Kaylee Delva.
The Brown and Gold continues its season Friday afternoon as they take on Lindenwood University at 3:00 p.m. on Motamed Field.
