Garden City, N.Y. -
Katie Barry put up a nine-point run from the serving line in the final set Monday evening, lifting the Adelphi University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against non-conference opponent Daemen College to extend its win streak to five.
Sara Mandreja led all players for the second-straight match, and was the only player at the Center for Recreation and Sport to reach double figures in kills (19).
Katarina Warburton anchored the Panthers (9-2) on defense with 24 digs, while
Brenna Valsted returned to pace the Adelphi attack with 27 assists.
An advantage in service aces and blocks for the home team proved beneficial, as the Wildcats (9-5) experienced difficulty in serve/receive. Three straight attack errors from Daemen in the first set allowed the home team to press ahead and lead by a seven-point margin, a deficit that was too great for the visitors to overcome. The second set was much of the same type of play, with Adelphi jumping ahead of their non-league opponent, by as many as six points.
Daemen's Ali Cousins sparked a 6-1 run that only had the Wildcats down by two, which brought them within reach of the home team. They managed to tie the contest at 24- and 25-all, as the teams used extra points to finally reach a decision.
Rachel ten Doeschate and
Samantha Collins teamed up for a block and Mandreja closed the door on the second frame, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Momentum then swung in favor of the Wildcats, as they used an 8-1 run midway through the third, largely peppered with Panther attack and service errors, as the hosts were held to a negative hitting percentage for the set. The fourth and eventual final set was close throughout, until a kill from
Cara McKenzie sent the home team on a three-point run, but Daemen rattled off four unanswered points to re-gain the lead.
It was a nine-point streak from the serving line for Barry that set the Panthers on a path to victory, as she recorded one service ace and the Wildcats were plagued with attack errors. It was another block courtesy of ten Doeschate and
Sophia Powless that closed out the set, en route to the Panthers' fifth-straight victory.
The team will depart for American International College this weekend, as they take on the Yellow Jackets in league action on Saturday, October 5. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.
