Garden City, N.Y. - After a slow first set, the Adelphi University volleyball team came back to earn its first Northeast-10 Conference victory over Pace University, 3-1, on Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Leading the way on offense were
Cara McKenzie and
Victoria Bailey, who were responsible for 12 and 10 kills, respectively. The latter nearly missed the double-double, accounting for eight digs, as NE10 Libero of the Week
Katarina Warburton led the team on defense with 18 digs to her name.
Pace and Adelphi went back-and-forth for the opening portion of the first set, with the Setters gaining momentum after a 7-2 run put them ahead by three. The hosts managed a comeback, using a kill from
Sara Mandreja and two Pace miscues to lock the score at 17-all. Another 6-1 spurt in favor of the visiting team was too much for the Panthers to overcome, as a service error and ace handed the first set to the Setters.
The next three sets were better representation of the home team, as they did not allow their opponents to score more than 18 points in the final three sets. Adelphi used a span of four points to open the second to command a lead which it didn't relinquish, while jumping out to at most a nine-point advantage.
Victoria Cast slammed the door in the second, accounting for the final two kills to even the match at 1-apiece.
The Adelphi defense held the Pace attack to a negative hitting percentage in the second and third sets, and even a sub-.100 mark for the last frame. At the net, the Brown and Gold held an advantage in blocks (4-1) and, at the serving line, recorded one more ace to secure their first win against a league opponent.
Despite trailing by one in the early going of the last set,
Sara Bisbe recorded two consecutive service aces that set Adelphi back on track, ultimately producing an 8-1 run that gave the home team a five-point lead. From there, the deficit was too much to overcome for the Setters, who were unable to string together enough of a run to deter the Panthers, who captured their third straight.
The team is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they host Le Moyne College at 1 p.m. at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
