Hooksett, N.H. - After suffering its first loss of the year on Thursday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team rebounded nicely in its return to Northeast-10 Conference play Sunday, defeating Southern New Hampshire University, 5-2, at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts in Hooksett.
For the second time in as many matches for Adelphi (3-1, 3-0 NE10), it took No. 1 doubles to decide who would earn the crucial doubles point.
The pair of
Barbie Quagliardi and
Nicole Kielan went head-to-head with SNHU's (2-1, 2-1 NE10) Magdalena Hubickova and Alexxa Etienne in a tiebreaker and won the decisive doubles match, 10-3. It was the third time in four dual matches this season that the No. 1 tandem of Quagliardi and Kielan have played in a tiebreaker.
While Quagliardi lost her first top-singles match of the year, it was Kielan and the other Panthers that picked up the slack to secure AU's third-straight league victory.
Kielan was a straight-set winner (6-4, 7-5) against Selin Seyfettinoglu at the No. 2 flight.
Amanda Franstedt, who paired up with
Nicole Stay for a 6-3 win at second doubles, fought back from a set down to defeat Etienne, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, in third singles. Stay also earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mina Houge at No. 4 singles.
Lea Baschanow won by identical 6-3 scores at sixth singles.
The Panthers are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 25), when they host University of New Haven in an NE10 clash at 2 p.m. at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City, N.Y.
