Garden City, N.Y. - On a hot Thursday afternoon, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell to Concordia College, 4-2, in non-conference action at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
The Panthers (2-1) started out well, capturing the doubles point in dramatic fashion to grab an early 1-0 advantage.
In the decisive top-doubles flight, AU's
Barbie Quagliardi and
Nicole Kielan forced a tiebreaker against Concordia's Josefina Torres Martin and Angelica Karlsson Hantzis.
The tandem of Quagliardi and Kielan fought back from 3-0 and 5-4 deficits, before winning three consecutive points to earn a 7-5 come-from-behind victory.
Quagliardi was also impressive in singles, defeating Hantzis in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 1 position to increase Adelphi's lead in the match to 2-0.
However, Concordia (1-0) won the next four singles flights -- three of which came in straight sets -- to rally for the win in its 2019-20 season debut.
The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference play on Sunday (Sept. 22) against Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
