Sparkill, N.Y. - The No. 10 Adelphi University field hockey team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College, 4-1, in a Northeast-10 match Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the early stages of the contest, Adelphi (3-2, 1-1 NE10) responded late in the first quarter, with a 12th-minute goal by
Danielle Kempf to even the score.
As the second quarter got underway,
Danielle Powers put the Panthers in front in the 19th minute with her first tally of the season.
Adelphi would take a slight 2-1 lead into halftime. Then, in the third quarter,
Elissa Frein found the back of the cage in the final seconds, widening the gap to a two-goal margin. Frein finished the contest with a game-high six shots on goal.
Making her first-ever appearance as a Panther,
Allie Laird scored in the 58th minute to cap off the scoring. Laird is a tranfser student from LIU Post, who initially came to Garden City to be a member of the Adelphi softball team.
AU put up 19 shots for the game, compared to STAC's eight. Junior goaltender
Alexandra Kanapes made four saves in her first career start in goal for the Panthers. Her counterparts, Suzanne Clarke and Jessie Hohenstein, combined for 10 saves on the day for the Spartans.
Adelphi continues its season Saturday (Sept. 21) at Saint Michael's College in an NE10 match-up at noon in Colchester, Vt.
