Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team fell 3-0 to No. 6 Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon in its 2019 Northeast-10 Conference opener at Motamed Field in Garden City.
The Panthers (2-2, 0-1 NE10) came out firing, putting two shots on goal in the first 3:38. Junior forward/midfielder
Jackie Brown and senior forward
Elissa Frein were both denied though by Hawks' junior goaltender Julia Hand, who racked up her first saves of the game.
Soon after, Frein had a breakaway opportunity for AU, but the Saint Anselm (3-0, 1-0 NE10) defense forced a turnover at the top of the arc to halt the threat.
The Hawks responded and put two attempts of their own on target -- both of which Adelphi goalie
Angelina Saunders was tall to the task on. Saunders held Saint Anselm off the board until the last minute of the first quarter, when Carly LaCasse skillfully drove around defenders to the cage, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge going into the second.
The Hawks upped their lead to 3-0 in the second quarter, with two goals in a span of 1:49. Ericka Meissner scored first for the Hawks in the 20th minute, while Hannah Friend found the back of the cage in the 22nd minute.
Overall, the Panthers were outshot 9-5, but matched Saint Anselm with four saves. Saunders stopped three shots and substitute goalie
Alexandra Kanapes came up with a save.
The Brown and Gold are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 17), when they continue their conference slate on the road against St. Thomas Aquinas College at 4 p.m. in Sparkill.
