No. 2 Men's Soccer Edges Molloy, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. - A three-goal first half was all the No. 2 Adelphi University men's soccer team needed Tuesday night in a 3-1 win over crosstown rival Molloy College at Motamed Field in Garden City.

Tied 1-1 in the opening 45-minute session, the Panthers (2-2) scored two goals in the final 11:19 of the half to bring a two-goal lead into the intermission. The tallies came less than seven minutes apart.

For the second time in as many games, sophomore midfielder Filippo Peri tallied what was the deciding goal for AU.

In the 34th minute, graduate midfielder Stephen Megaloudis bent a free kick towards the right post that Molloy (1-1-1) starting goalkeeper Dennis Mejia made a diving save to his left on to keep it out of the net. Peri was there though to stuff in the rebound to give Adelphi the lead.

Then, in the 41st minute, Megaloudis added to the scoresheet with an unassisted goal. With room to maneuver, Megaloudis dribbled to the top of the box and fired a shot into the right-side netting, making it a 3-1 game.

Adelphi broke through for the game's first goal, as well. Just 4:37 into the match, Marciano was fouled in the 18-yard box by Mejia, which set the stage for a penalty shot. Marciano then finished a shot into the upper-right corner of the net to put the Panthers in front early.

Marciano had a game-high eight shots (three SOG) on the evening. Megaloudis contributed four shots -- three of which were on target. Peri and senior forward Aidan Keenan had two shots apiece. As a team, Adelphi doubled up Molloy in shots, 22-11, and held a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Apicella made a game-high-tying four saves in the effort for the Panthers. All four of those stops came in the second half to keep the Lions from pulling closer.

Head Coach Gary Book and his Adelphi squad are back in action Friday (Sept. 13), when they host NCAA Division II newcomer College of Staten Island at 7:30 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City.
