Garden City, N.Y. - After a scoreless first half, the No. 2 Adelphi University men's soccer team exploded for six second-half goals Friday night in a 6-1 victory over NCAA Division II newcomer College of Staten Island at Motamed Field in Garden City.
The two teams combined for just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, before the rout ensued in the latter session.
In the second half, it took only 4:30 for Adelphi (3-0) to break the scoreless tie. Senior forward
Aidan Keenan put back a
Paolo Marciano header that struck off the post for the game's first goal.
Nearly eight minutes later, the Panthers tacked on another, when senior forward
Taylor Kaczynski headed a Marciano cross into the lower left corner of the net to increase AU's lead to 2-0.
The scoring didn't stop there. Four other players would find the back of the net for Adelphi, before the final horn sounded.
Sophomore midfielder/forward
Giancarlo Vacca and Marciano struck just 2:12 apart, while freshman forwards
Tim Cleere and
Alex Sipos netted their first collegiate goals.
The Panthers outshot the Dolphins (1-3) by a 17-9 count in the match and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Adelphi's
Matt Apicella and CSI's Jake Foeldes made one save apiece.
Head Coach
Gary Book and the Panthers are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 17), when they travel to Lakewood, N.J. for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt at Georgian Court University.
