Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team got back on the winning track on Janet L. Ficke Field on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Southern Connecticut State University Owls in a doubleheader, 5-0 and 8-0.
Adelphi's rookies stole the show in the victories, as
Ashley Lombardi and
Emily Whitman combined to drive in seven runs across the two games.
Lombardi launched her first career home run, a solo shot to left center in the sixth inning of game one, while Whitman followed her with a two-run, inside the park homer in that inning, and also notched a two-run triple and an RBI single in the run-ruled nightcap.
In the leadoff spot, Whitman went 5-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs scored across both games, as Kaliah Konkel and
Elisabeth Berard joined the rookie tandem with a multi-hit game two.
The junior duo combined to go 4-for-5 in the bottom of the Adelphi (18-15, 10-4 NE10) in game two, while scoring four runs, in which sophomore
Hannah Pineda also drove in two courtesy of her fourth home run of the season.Â
Ally Muller and
Nicole Mengel each threw shutouts in the circle for the Panthers, with the former falling one short of her career-high with 11 strikeouts and Mengel allowing just three hits across six innings of work.Â
Up next, softball kicks off a four-game series at the College of Saint Rose on Saturday at noon.
