Old Westbury, N.Y. - With a tie game at the half, the top-ranked Adelphi men's lacrosse program found their offense in the remaining two quarters en route to a 16-12 victory over NYIT at President's Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (11-0) outscored the home team in the second, third and final quarters, despite trailing 4-2 after the opening frame.
Gordon Purdie Jr. led all players with 6 points but was followed by leading goal scorers
Ian Kirby and
John Arcidiacono who each registered three in the win.
The Bears (2-9) raced to a 6-2 lead early in the second quarter on a goal from Jason Sullvian, although the Panthers ultimately pulled even at 7 by halftime.
Angelo Caiazzo and long pole
Sean McGovern jump started a 5-1 run for the visiting Northeast-10 squad, as
James Hall and Kirby also got in on the scoring to bring the Panthers within one. As the clock continued to wind down,
Michael Osmundsen buried a low shot past Brian Jockers to make it 7-all going into the break.
In goal for NYIT, Jockers completed the game with 19 saves, a new career mark for the junior netminder.
NYIT's Matt Arnone took advantage of the man-up possession in the early going of the third to regain the advantage, however Adelphi scored five of the next six tallies to put the game out of reach for the time being. Two straight goals from the home team to start the fourth brought them within one, but Arcidiacono, Hall and Purdie all contributed on the attack to successfully put the game away.
The hosts were plagued with turnovers in the final quarter of play in what seemed like an even affair, although the Panthers had the upper hand in nearly every category.
Mark Andrejack commanded the faceoff X, winning 24 of 29 attempts.
Adelphi goes back to NE10 play on Saturday, April 6 when they trip north to face off with the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose.
