Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - A whopping 17 runs across the final four innings propelled the Adelphi University baseball team to a 23-9 road victory over non-conference foe Mercy College on Wednesday afternoon.
Adelphi (16-5) combined for a total of 19 hits against Mercy, as the Panthers saw five batters with two hits, two with three, and three more adding one hit to the stat line.
In his first appearance in the Panther lineup, Kyle Olson recorded a career day, going 3-for-4 and three RBIs against the Mavericks. The rookie launched his first career home run, which was also his first hit, in the second inning to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead early.
Lawrence Cicileo also posted three hits, scoring four of Adelphi's runs, while Thomas Colombo, Lucas Terwilliger, Kevin Krippel, Tyler Becker and Jordan Milo all recorded two hits for the Brown and Gold, with Milo posting a career high of three RBIs, and Terwilliger slamming a three-run homer in the eighth.
After Olson's blast, Mercy (11-17) evened the score in the next inning off three consecutive singles from Mercy batters. With the scoreboard reading 2-2, a bases-loaded walk gave the Mavericks a one-run edge before a fielding error put the hosts up 4-2 after three.
However, the Brown and Gold tied the score for a second time, this time off an RBI double from Milo and base hits for Cicileo and Colombo, scoring the senior's first RBI of the contest. The visitors then regained their lead with a sacrifice fly courtesy of Terwilliger to score a previously walked Morse, followed by an RBI double from Krippel.
Although the Mavericks evened the score at 6-6 once more, Adelphi regained its lead again and never looked back, scoring 17 runs across the final four innings. In the sixth, Morse kicked things off with a triple to right field, driving in Milo from first. Morse later scored on Cicileo's second RBI single of the day to put the Panthers up 8-6, and then crossed home plate off another base hit from Colombo for a three-run edge after six.
Adelphi's nine-run burst in the next inning began with singles from Becker and Olson, putting the runners in position for Milo to secure two RBIs with his first single of the contest. Two batters later, Cicileo's single loaded the bases for Colombo to walk in the 12th run.
In the next at bats, back-to-back singles from Terwilliger and Krippel made the score 15-6, who immediately scored after off a triple from Becker in the next at bat. The junior then tallied the final run of the inning on Olson's third RBI of the contest.
Terwilliger's three-run homer to left field put the icing on the cake for a 21-6 cushion, and in the next at bats, pinch hitters Robert Affenita III and Brandon Warick scored the Panthers' final two runs off an RBI single form Dominic Paolo.
The Panthers will hit the road again this weekend for a doubleheader against Saint Anselm on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
