West Haven, Conn. - After rallying in the middle innings following an early deficit, the Adelphi University baseball team was unable to play out of a deadlock in the series finale at the University on New Haven on Monday afternoon.
The Panthers and Chargers completed 12 innings before the game was called due to darkness at 5-5, which will not resume after Adelphi won the first two games of the series on Saturday to seal the overall win.
The Chargers (11-22-1, 5-14-1 NE10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings, pushing three across home plate in the second. To start things off, the Chargers' Matt Chamberlain grounded out to the shortstop to drive in the hosts' first run of the contest. In the next frame, New Haven tacked on three more runs, beginning with three singles to put a runner on third, who scored on a passed ball.
Later in the inning, a two-run single to left center from Noah Budzik gave the Chargers a four-run edge over the Panthers.
However, the Panthers (31-5-1, 18-1-1 NE10) came within two runs in the third frame, following a Jonathan Iadevaia single and an error with Brett Malm at the plate advanced him to third. With Lawrence Cicileo up in the next at bat, the junior's single through the left side scored the Panthers' first run of the contest.
The visitors then tied and took the lead across the seventh and eighth innings, first with an RBI single credited to Michael Cattani, and the tying run in thanks to a sacrifice fly off Malm's bat. The Panthers later took the lead off an RBI double from Cicileo to go up 5-4, however, the Chargers responded in the eighth, making the score even for the second time following a run scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the ninth, Tim Feliz led off with a bunt single and then stole second, but could not score, and the teams proceeded to remain scoreless the rest of the way before the game was called. New Haven saw a runner reach in the bottom of the 10th and 11th innings against Tom Ambrosino, but could not spring the upset. The junior finished things off on the mound for Adelphi, going a season-high 4.2 innings and striking out six batters.
Iadevaia went 3-for-6 with two runs scored for Adelphi, while Lucas Terwilliger and Cicileo added a pair of hits each with a combined three RBIs. Cattani, Feliz, Thomas Colombo, Brandon Warick and Jordan Milo also all contributed one hit apiece in the contest.
The Brown and Gold will return to William J. Bonomo Field tomorrow for a divisional contest against Pace University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
