West Haven, Conn.- It was another story of strong offense for the No. 11 Adelphi University baseball team on Saturday, as the Panthers downed the University of New Haven, 8-5, and 11-4 to extend its win streak to 17 games.
Game one's victory saw seven batters in the hit column for Adelphi, with Michael Cattani leading the way going 3-for-5, while Tim O'Connor and Brandon Warick each added a pair of hits, including a three-run homer from the latter.
Kevin Glasser earned his first win on the mound for Adelphi, as the sophomore hurled 1.2 innings, fanning three batters along the way.
New Haven (11-20, 5-12 NE10) jumped out ot a 1-0 lead on the Panthers in the second inning off an RBI double to center field. However, Adelphi (31-5, 18-1 NE10) responded in the next frame, scoring the tying run beginning with a base hit from O'Connor and a double from Warick's bat to put O'Connor in scoring position. The sophomore later scored the Panther's first run on a wild pitch by the Chargers.
After the home team regained the lead following another RBI double, the Brown and Gold tied the game for a second time off consecutive singles from Cicileo, Cattani and Terwilliger to even the score 2-2 in the fourth.
Later in the inning, Warick's three-run homer gave the Panthers a three-run edge over New Haven, securing the lead for the remainder of the contest. Continuing its fourth inning rally, back-to-back doubles from Malm and Colombo put Adelphi up 7-2 to end the inning.
The Chargers brought it within two, scoring off an Adelphi error after back-to-back hits for two runs, as well as an RBI single in the fifth inning.
The Panthers added one more run to the board to end the game with Cattani roping a double to left center and later scoring off a throwing error by the hosts.
In game two, Adelphi jumped out to a 7-0 lead across the first three innings, scoring three apiece in the first two, and one in the third. Iadevaia and Cattani both played perfect games, going a combined 7-for-7 at the dish. Cicileo added three hits on five at bats, while O'Connor, Terwilliger and Malm each added one hit.
To start things off, Iadevaia led off with a single, which eventually scored him in thanks to an RBI triple to right field off Cicileo's bat. In the next at bat, Cicileo crossed home plate following an RBI single from Cattani, giving Adelphi a 3-0 advantage.
In the next frame, Malm's three-run double broke the Adelphi single-season record, as he now leads the record book with 21. They later scored the seventh run on O'Connor's single through the left side, bringing Cicileo around once again.
The Chargers cut the Panthers lead to three across the middle innings, scoring on three sacrifice fly balls and an Adelphi error. However, the visitor's had an answer in their final at bats, scoring first on a wild pitch before Jack Ryan roped a three-run double for the final runs.
The Brown and Gold will finish the three-game series versus the Chargers in a rescheduled contest on Monday, April 29. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.Â
